Seniors in motion stay in motion. Putting that guiding principle into action has helped The Haven at Silverwoods stand out as one of Ocean County’s most highly regarded assisted living communities. With zero tolerance for boredom, and the most ambitious calendar of physical, intellectual, social and spiritual activities, still vibrant residents have daily opportunities to keep active in mind, body and spirit.
At this energetic community, there’s always something interesting, engaging and unexpected on the agenda, thanks to a comprehensive activity program led by Activities Director, Linda Panarella. “Activities are so much more than bingo and arts and crafts. We engage residents daily with a diverse offering of opportunities for self-expression, socialization, spiritual expression, education, and active movement.”
Motion and movement activities are not only designed to build up strength and help reduce the risk of falls, but by sharing the common bonds of aging, strengthen the spirit of community. A daily fitness program includes energetic music for chair dancing and scarf dancing. In addition to favorite games like horseshoes, bocce ball and bean bag Twister, Wii games provide residents stimulating fun and fitness as well as friendly competition.
Panarella and her dedicated team of compassionate activities professionals have created a welcoming environment and work collectively to help seniors meet the challenges of aging by catering to their growing needs in the most purposeful ways. Daily word games provide mental stimulation and challenge residents to think differently. Entertaining card games such as Poker and Pinocle, and dice games too, all have cognitive benefits for players who use and retain skills such as evaluation, judgment and strategy.
The arts are heavily promoted at The Haven. Traditional art classes, horticulture classes, and craft sessions are but a few of the offerings. Residents are encouraged to take the stage for activities like drama readings, as well as the inventive story theater where they can use various props to spontaneously create their own stories. Two recent additions, Dancing Hands hand tapping classes and the professionally led Drum Circles, have become hugely popular, engaging a large group of residents of all abilities in a rewarding and energizing time of self-expression.
The Haven at Silverwoods has always embraced the promise of new technology to benefit the health and well being of its residents, so it comes as no surprise that the iPad has become a vital tool in an ever expanding wireless world of activities. By accessing content-rich websites, such as YouTube, seniors have been entertained and educated, reminisced, and traveled the universe. Residents devoted to life-long faith practices have benefited too by accessing inspirational videos to help enhance Sunday morning worship.
Innumerable opportunities to connect positively with the community around them, especially community children, has helped add more latitude to residents’ lifestyle. To that point, The Haven has maintained a five-year relationship with Caregiver Kids through the Caregiver Volunteers of Central New Jersey. Energetic 5th and 6th graders visit multiple times a year to play traditional and digital games, create craft projects and share lively discussions that mix youthful exuberance with senior wisdom.
Several times each month joyous theme events take over The Haven. Residents and dedicated members of the Activity and Dining Services departments collaborate on choosing the theme, as well as the table favors, decorations, menus and more that bring it all together. Celebrations have included Doggone Good Lunch, Lunch Under the Big Top with a circus parade and Afternoon at the Boardwalk with carnival games. Perhaps the celebration of the royal wedding was most memorable. Residents reenacted parts of the ceremonious day, complete with bride, groom, flower girl and ring bearer.
The activities landscape at The Haven is limitless, including a Men’s Club, ladies-themed parties, trips, outings, nightly film presentations and performances from professional entertainers. Being part of an ever-expanding activities program, seniors can continue to enhance their talents and abilities, while bringing new experiences into their daily lives. With so many opportunities to play, pray, laugh, grow and stay fit together, residents at The Haven at Silverwoods are inspired to keep active and stay healthy –– so that they can experience it all again and again.
